Welcome to Sandford-on-Thames

Here you will find information about our village we hope you will find interesting and informative, whether you already live here or are just visiting.

Sandford-on-Thames is a village beside the River Thames about 3.5 miles south of Oxford city centre. There has been a settlement here since before the Domesday survey when there were only 18 families listed. Today the population stands at about 1,200 (2011 census) and only the church stands substantially as it did then.

The last few years have seen several changes to the village. There has been a major refurbishment and enlarging of the village hall which includes a thriving community shop and café (Talking Shop). The work to develop these and create a true community hub has involved many volunteers from all areas of Sandford and the immediate neighbourhood enabling new friendships and connections to form.

For more information on the shop and café, see the Talking Shop homepage.

There is a developing interest in environmental matters in Sandford as demonstrated in the installation of 3 giant hydraulic Archimedes Screws at the historic Lasher weir on the Thames and the recent addition of underfloor heating in the ancient church powered by a ground source heat pump. The Heyford Meadow wild life friendly amenity space, owned and maintained by the Oxford Preservation Trust is a large tract of land beside the river. The land was left to the trust in the will of Mr Tait with the support of the Challis family. The Trust cleared the land which had become a wasteland full of discarded objects and fly tipping (250 tonnes) and has since undertaken a programme of low impact and sustainable renovation, planting native trees and bushes to encourage wild life; creating ponds and scrapes for amphibians, reptiles, invertebrates and birds.

A recent initiative, which is still under development, is a Community Orchard in the triangle of land between the Village Hall car park, the graveyard and the footpath between Henley Road and Church Road. To read more about this, click here.
